Lakers News: Incumbent LA Star Already Having Big Impact On New Signing
Los Angeles Lakers culture is real, and it’s set by LeBron James.
Recent offseason signing Christian Wood has noticed that, remarking:
Christian a 6’9 center with an extremely versatile offensive skillset, has a great opportunity to be a big-time contributor for your Lakers out of the gate. His 3-point shooting prowess (seasons of shooting 38.6% and 39% from 3-point range), along with his ability to make plays off the dribble, in the post, and via attacking closeouts provides the Lakers with unique offensive self-creation beyond LeBron, Austin Reaves, and D’Angelo Russell.
Wood’s potential to add a spark to the Lakers has been evident in his success as a member of the Houston Rockets and Dallas Mavericks across the past few seasons, as in roughly/under 30 minutes per game, Wood put up between 16.6 and 21 points per game, along with between 7 and 10 rebounds per game.
Seeing LeBron’s early arrivals at the gym as motivation for his own improved work ethic is terrific to see, and with more time dedicated in the gym, potentially alongside LeBron, we could be seeing significant improvement from Wood in the areas of his game that are often criticized.
For example, in Wood’s own words, “people talked about how bad my defense was.” He’s taken on this criticism as motivation to improve, and increasing his hours in the gym will only accelerate that trend.
Potential defensive improvement would mean magnitudes for the Lakers. His polished offensive skillset paired with improvement defensively would mean one of most well-rounded big men in the NBA, and pairing that with LeBron, Anthony Davis, Austin Reaves, D’Angelo Russell, and arguably the deepest roster in the NBA should sound off alarm bells throughout the league.
